I looked for other products that were actually suited for disposal. The most compelling example came from fruit, nature’s vehicle for reproduction. While a lemon tree will produce hundreds of lemons during its lifetime, only one or two will actually germinate and grow. Fruit is more successful at dying than at growing. However, in the words of the authors of Cradle to Cradle, no one would see the ground littered with fruit and say “How inefficient and wasteful!” A lemon, while being apt for reproduction, is also approrpiate for other uses, such as food for animals, fertilizer for the soil, storage for summer rain, etc. Waste equals food. |
