In the clay target system, the environmental impact includes habitat destruction and biodiversity reduction from open-pit mining, pollution from clay production and firing, toxics in groundwater and surface water bodies from clay pieces left in the field, and health hazards from polynuclear aromatics. Furthermore, contaminated soil will have to be removed and taken as toxic waste to a controlled landfill, avaraging 2500 tons per shooting range, at a cost of around 10 million dollars. |
